Exchange Rates and the Vietnamese Dong

Vietnam has two forms of legal tender currently. The United States dollar and the Vietnamese Dong are both accepted, especially in the cities and areas where tourism is central to the economy.

The official currency of Vietnam is the Dong. It is available in both paper and coin denominations. Paper notes start at 200d and go all the way up to 500,000d. Coins came back into circulation in 2003 and were released in 200d, 500d, 1000d, 2000d and 5000d.

The Man On The Money: The Significance of Uncle Ho

There is perhaps no more well known icon associated with the country of Vietnam than that of the former leader Ho Chi Minh. In fact, a portrait of Uncle Ho, as he is informally known as in Vietnam, is printed on every denomination of Vietnamese Dong. In addition, the 500,000 dong note also features an image of Ho Chi Minh’s birthplace, Kim Lien.

Paper Vs. Metal: Types of Vietnamese Dong

The Vietnamese Dong is the official currency of the country of Vietnam and has been since 1978. The funds are issued by the State Bank of Vietnam.

It is issued in two different forms. The banknotes are more commonly used and widely circulated. The older issued paper forms are no longer produced but still in circulation in denominations of 100d, 200d, 500d, 1,000d, 2,000d and 5,000d. The banknotes that are still being issued are in denominations including 10,000d, 20,000d, 50,000d, 100,000d, 200,000d and the largest is 500,000d.

The History of the Vietnamese Dong

The Vietnamese Dong currency has a pretty decent history, which can be traced all the way back to the early 1940s. This currency has undergone several look changes.
